Tom Underwood

Tom was born and raised in Dickinson County, Iowa. He is a graduate of Spirit Lake High School, Class of 1966 and is a graduate of Iowa Lakes Community College where he received his Associates of Arts degree in 1968. Tom then attended Sioux Falls College until April 1970 when he was drafted into the Army during the Vietnam War. Tom served 6 years in the Iowa Army National Guard and was awarded the General Recommendation Award, which is presented to the top 10 percent of all graduates.

After his military service, Tom worked as Deputy Assessor for the Dickinson County Assessor’s Office for 6 years where he received his Appraisal I Certificate from the State of Iowa. Tom went to work at Cornell Abstract Company, Spirit Lake, Iowa, in May 1972, became a partner in the abstract office in 1973 and was sole owner from 1992 to 1998. In April 1998, Tom sold a half interest in the abstract office to Dallas Brown. Tom also owned Jackson County Abstract Company, Jackson, Minnesota, from 1993 to 1998.

In connection with the operation of Jackson County Abstract Company Tom passed the Minnesota State Abstracter’s Examination and was a licensed abstracter in the State of Minnesota. Jackson County Abstract Company not only did abstracts of title, but was also an agent for First American Title Insurance Company.
